About the Market

In 1903, the Rice Street Market was established by the Town of Edmonton’s Council. This historic fixture was located in Market Square, the future site of the Stanley A. Milner Library. From humble beginnings, the Rice Street market quickly gained popularity. It became a regular weekend destination for Edmontonians and tourists alike thanks to its focus on local produce and entertainment.

Several years after its conception, the Rice Street Market was renamed to the City Market. Since then, the Market has been the site of generations of vendors and their local neighbors helping each other out, and changing the community of the downtown core while they’re at it.

From our location outdoors on 104 Street, the EDFM has been happy to accommodate more visitors in our year-round, indoor market located next to the City Hall. Our new building on 10305-97 Street is situated in The Quarters, and has enough local Edmonton history to make it the perfect location to visit whether you’re looking for fresh produce, or a cultural experience.

Our Elevator

Did you know we have one of the OLDEST working elevators in Edmonton? 🛗

Our elevator is over 100 YEARS OLD! First carrying cargo and factory workers, to now market shoppers. That’s a lot of elevator trips! Given it’s age, it still runs smooth thanks to regular maintenance and our trusty elevator operator. Give it a ride next time you’re at the market and embrace yourself in the history of the building!
